Time to bundle up

The monsoon is back, and Mersing had its first storm today.
Most people think the monsoon is wet and rainy, but actually most
of the time there are strong north easterly winds. It makes the weather nice and cool, like Cameron Highlands or Genting resort. In fact it is cool enough to wear a light jacket, perfect snuggling weather or cuddle to a good book if thats your cup of tea.

It's amazing to just stand by the sea, and marvel at the powerful waves pounding the shore. Although, you can't go swimming in the open ocean, and snorkling is not recommended, there are several coves in the area, where you can still swim (always check with the locals though to make sure).

The monsoon season, gives nature a chance to regenerate from commercial fishing and other human activities. So celebrate nature's renewal and come enjoy the season !

Hi, Great Job on the blog.

I'm from Mersing myself, and this is a good reference for my friends whom I'm inviting after christmas.

Any more tips of what we could do in this weather?

Could you include spots that we could go swim during the monsoon?

thanks

There are coves which are south facing, like at Tg Resang (North of Mersing). These are typically not too deep and protected by the NE waves.

Another UNHAPPY CUSTOMER of BLUEWATER EXPRESS!
All/Most of the boat staff unfortunately are chain smokers and their second-hand smoke permeates the passenger compartment. Customers should demand their money back and other damages for this kind of disgusting abuse.

I agree, most vessels should only allow smoking outdoors not indoors in the cabin. Its unhealthy and poses a fire hazard.
Maritime department of Malaysia , hello ?

Hi,

I am from Holland. Me and my girlfriend will visite Mersing in 22th of January. First we wanted to book a residence in Tioman Island, but now we first want to stay at least one day in Mersing cause of the monsoon, before we go to Tioman.
I will propably book Hotel Seri Malaysia for one night.

Do you know the forecast regarding the monsoon perhaps?

Regards from the cold Holland.

So true what you said about the monsoon: yes, November and December are wet and stormy, but from January onwards, the skies are blue, there's hardly any rain (no rain for over a week now here in Singapore) and there's a lovely cool breeze blowing almost non-stop. Best of all the humidity is way down.

It feels almost Mediterranean :)

BTW, I hear that Tioman is open year-round; live goes on in the kampongs there, after all. But some resorts won't be open during the monsoon months - though I understand that the larger ones, Berjaya and such are open 365 days per year.

That said, the bottle-neck during Chinese New Year is the ferries to Tioman. The ferries tend to run a lot less frequently during January and February, maybe one ferry per day. The reason is the state of the sea and the low tide issues outside the Mersing harbor, the departure point to Tioman.

My advice to Tioman travelers during the monsoon months is that if you've already booked Berjaya or similar, or you want to go to Tioman during Chinese New year, then it's probably best to book your ferry tickets as far in advance as possible, so you won't be stranded at the departure jetty due to the ferry for that day being already full.

I've added the company name and URL to a site that sells ferry tickets online in the form fields. Perhaps this info is considered useful enough to be not considered spam :)

Tioman Boleh!
